Health Benefits of Reading

Social Media is a wonderful tool to share, to connect, to rejoice the free time, NO DOUBT about it. But all the good things are not good things from every angle: Social media has created a big havoc in the lives of human beings; parents start neglecting their children, intimates start ignoring each other, professionals start consuming the majority of their time on social media than job-required-work. Nothing seems so strange than focusing more on status updates and what others are commenting rather than connecting deeply with other individuals. The strange paradox, we find here is: through you may have 1000 friends on Facebook, more than 1000 followers on Twitter and Instagram, in the time of real need, not even five of them turn up to help. This fact is not unknown to humans still the social media frenzy has reached its maximum level.

In this madness of updating and selfies, the science-backed healthy habit of reading is lost somewhere. It has been curious topics of researchers why and how the readers’ rate gets dropped. Today we find hardly any book in the hands of people around; instead, we find them ‘wired’ by their headphones. As animals are chained, today’s homo sapiens are chained to their gadgets.

This article is about pleading people to read, if not for their development than for their health. Reading really helps us to reduce the stress level, preserves brain health, helps us to get good sleep and boost our happiness and life-satisfaction and fight anxiety and depression (It really works, I have been experiencing since long).

Ask any avid/voracious reader, he/she will confess that immersing in reading, make the brain alive. MRI scanned researches support that after reading the books of more than 30 pages, the brain’s linguistic ability and intelligence increase. In the cases of depressed patients, reading uplift their moods and make them more positive about the things. When you read a real book (I mean the real book, not the e-book on mobiles, tablets or e-readers), you get the sound sleep with deep relaxation (so start from today). Children, who read better, can apply their logic well, grasp the concept more comfortably and understand the cause and effect better. Books expose more words (50% more) to the readers than watching TV to the viewers.

When we read a book, we remember a lot of things and our brains do this with marvellous ease. In this internet-crazy world, our attention span is drawn in a million different directions due to multi-tasking throughout the day. Try to read a book for 15-20 minutes before work and see the surprising rise in the productivity of yours throughout the day.

As reading is one of the best receptive activities for language development, not only it increases the vocabulary but also polishes the language by adding the structures to the mind. The subject we read also provides immense inner peace and tranquillity. Reading spiritual texts can also lower the blood pressure and bring calmness. Reading self-help books also works as mood-uplifters for those who are suffering from mild illness.

Departing Thoughts:
I request you to devote some time of your life to read something that uplifts yourself. No matter what you think but read. It has tremendous benefits for your body and mind. Now with the above-mentioned scientific facts, I am sure that you will surely put reading daily in your schedule.
